Thoughts on James Kirkland
Boxing fans know that light middleweight prospect James Kirkland is in prison on gun possession. Recently on ESB a thread called "Free James Kirkland" was started and it got the hugest backlash i've seen on the website in a while. James Kirkland was a top prospect and was getting ready to do huge things in his career. He was right at his peak he had recently headlined an HBO card against Joel Julio and fought on the undercard of Ricky Hatton vs Paulie Malignaggi. He was about to get exposure on a pay per view that sold about 1.7 million estimated. This was going to be Kirkland's leap into the boxing spotlight and showcase his talent. Weeks leading up to the show he was arrested for gun possession. Kirkland got in trouble years before and was on probation which led to him being held in prison. James Kirkland knew the guidelines of his probation and he knew that he had to be well aware of his surroundings. I'm not sure if the gun was his or not either way it was stupid. Being a felon its hard to get a job, and its hard to get opportunities better yet second chances. Not everyone can get a 2nd chance and James Kirkland got one and didnt take advantage of it. The outlook isnt looking too good for James Kirkland maybe he can get lucky but as an ordinary man I think he should get his punishment coming to him, but as a boxing fan I would like to see him in the ring again. What would it say about the justice system if James Kirkland a man who was arrested for armed robbery six years ago on probation and gets arrested for a possession charge and gets a lenient sentence compared to a man who was arrested and wrongfully accused of the same thing that gets 30 years. I think Kirkland should be punished, I think hes looking at 5-10 i'm not sure of the case, but as a boxing fan I feel that the boxing world was robbed of a future superstar in the making.
